چکیده

This study investigates a two component decomposition technique for HH/VV-polarized PolSAR (Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data. The approach is a straight forward adaption of the Yamaguchi decomposition and decomposes the data into two scattering contributions: surface and double bounce under the assumption of a negligible vegetation scattering component in Tundra environments. The dependencies between the features of this two and the classical three component Yamaguchi decomposition were investigated for Radarsat-2 (quad) and TerraSAR-X (HH/VV) data for the Mackenzie Delta Region, Canada. In situ data on land cover were used to derive the scattering characteristics and to analyze the correlation among the PolSAR features. The double bounce and surface scattering features of the two and three component scattering model (derived from pseudo-HH/VVand quad-polarized data) showed similar scattering characteristics and positively correlated-R2 values of 0.60 (double bounce) and 0.88 (surface scattering) were observed. The presence of volume scattering led to differences between the features and these were minimized for land cover classes of low vegetation height that showed little volume scattering contribution. In terms of separability, the quad-polarized Radarsat-2 data offered the best separation of the examined tundra land cover types and will be best suited for the classification. This is anticipated as it represents the largest feature space of all tested ones. However; the classes “wetland” and “bare ground” showed clear positions in the feature spaces of the Cand X-Band HH/VV-polarized data and an accurate classification of these land cover types is promising. Among the possible dual-polarization modes of Radarsat-2 the HH/VV was found to be the favorable mode for the characterization of the aforementioned tundra land cover classes due to the coherent acquisition and the preserved co-pol. phase. Contrary, HH/HV-polarized and VV/VH-polarized data were found to be best suited for the characterization of mixed and shrub dominated tundra.

Scattering Mechanism Extraction by a Modified Cloude-Pottier Decomposition for Dual Polarization SAR

Dual polarization is a typical operational mode of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR). However, few studies have considered the scattering mechanism extraction of dual-polarization SARs. A modified Cloude-Pottier decomposition is proposed to investigate the performance of the scattering mechanism extraction of dual-polarization SARs. It is theoretically demonstrated that only HH-VV SAR...

Classification of Coastal Arctic Land Cover by Means of Terrasar-x Dual Co-polarized Data

Arctic coastal regions are threatened by changing climatic conditions and anthropogenic disturbances. Since SAR systems operate independently from external illumination and are not affected by cloud shadowing, they are suitable for continuous monitoring of pan-arctic environments. In this work we show the application of dual co-polarized (HH/VV) TerraSAR-X (TSX) data for unsupervised water and ...

Oil spill detection from SAR image using SVM based classification

In this paper, the potential of fully polarimetric L-band SAR data for detecting sea oil spills is investigated using polarimetric decompositions and texture analysis based on SVM classifier. First, power and magnitude measurements of HH and VV polarization modes and, Pauli, Freeman and Krogager decompositions are computed and applied in SVM classifier. Texture analysis is used for identificati...

Decomposition Methods for the Estimation of Bare Soil Moisture Using Fully Polarimetric Sar Data

Soil moisture plays a critical role in the surface energy balance at the soil-atmosphere interface [4]. Using radar backscattering to retrieve soil moisture is a method of major concern due to its sensitivity to soil moisture [14] [15].In the past decades, many empirical, semi-empirical and physical models that relate the measured 0 to volumetric soil moisture mv have been carried out[14][15]. ...

Analysis of Compact Polarimetric Sar Imaging Modes

Recent interest in dual-pol SAR systems has lead to a novel approach to dual-pol SAR, the so-called compact polarimetric imaging mode. The original idea, presented by Souyris et al. [1], employed a SAR system transmitting a linearly polarized wave rotated by 45° with respect to the orientation of the vertical (V) and horizontal (H) receive antennas. One then constructed pseudo quad-pol data fro...
